Adding to the economic and humanitarian problems of Somalia is the introduction of large amounts of fake currency into the country.

This adds a lot to the already high inflation rate, leading to skyrocketing prices.

As the economists say, inflation is a tax on the poor. In this case it also hugely enriches those who introduce the false currency.

MOGADISHU, Somalia - Ongoing clashes in the capital left nearly 300 Somalis dead and hundreds more wounded last month, a local human rights group said Saturday.

Elman Human Rights said 292 people had been killed and another 325 wounded in Mogadishu in January. Civilians are frequently caught in the crossfire between government troops and their Ethiopian allies and Eritrean-backed Islamic insurgents.

I'm not sure how much people outside New Zealand and Australia care about the plane hijacking in New Zealand a few days ago. However, I can imagine that the communities further away are also taking about it. Down here it was big news and not only the Somali community was talking about it.

Mogadishu—Islamic insurgents in Somalia have raided Baledogle military airfield around 100 kilometres to the west of the capital Mogadishu. The rebels seized an unknown quantity of weapons and witnesses report that they killed three government soldiers. Baledogle is Somalia's main military airfield.
