MogadishuIslamic insurgents in Somalia have raided Baledogle military airfield around 100 kilometres to the west of the capital Mogadishu. The rebels seized an unknown quantity of weapons and witnesses report that they killed three government soldiers. Baledogle is Somalia's main military airfield.
The Islamic rebels have been waging an insurrection against the interim government since Ethiopian and government troops drove them from power at the start of last year. In the preceding six months the Islamists had ruled much of the country.
Human rights organisations say that over the past year 6,500 people have died in fighting in the capital Mogadishu. The conflict has also driven hundreds of thousands of Somalis from their homes. ...

Ethiopian troops backing Somalia's transitional federal government withdrew from a key military base in the central regions on Monday, witnesses and residents said.
Since early 2007, the Ethiopian army maintained a 1,000-strong garrison in a base east of Beletwein, the capital of the central Hiran region.
Ethiopian army trucks were seen leaving the base on Monday and were reportedly heading west, towards the Somali-Ethiopian border.
