MOGADISHU, Somalia - Ongoing clashes in the capital left nearly 300 Somalis dead and hundreds more wounded last month, a local human rights group said Saturday.
Elman Human Rights said 292 people had been killed and another 325 wounded in Mogadishu in January. Civilians are frequently caught in the crossfire between government troops and their Ethiopian allies and Eritrean-backed Islamic insurgents.
"Those who are behind the human rights violations should be brought to justice," said Sudan Ali Ahmed, the organization's chairman.
Elman obtains its figures from medical institutions. Obtaining a reliable death toll in Somalia is nearly impossible and the true figure may be higher.
Aid groups warn that many injured cannot access treatment because ambulances are often unable to operate and private cars may be shelled or shot at.
